Our History
The name Plotkin has long been associated with real estate in Western Massachusetts. Our founder, Samuel D. Plotkin, began his career in the field in 1962 as a broker and property manager in hi
s father-in-law’s firm, Nirenstein's National Realty Map Co. In addition to providing commercial and residential real estate services, the firm published the Nirenstein Real Estate Atlas, a national reference tool used by businesses and corporations to identify available commercial locations within all major U.S. cities. Major retailers such as S.S. Kreskies and Sears and Roebuck used these atlases. The New York Times announced the delivery of a two-volume publication in January 22, 1956.
In 1963, Mr. Plotkin established his own firm, becoming one of the first real estate practitioners in the area to specialize in medical office development and management. Known for his ability to not only introduce people to the right property – but to one another – Mr. Plotkin quickly earned a reputation as a skillful real estate and relationship broker.
Nathan Nirenstain, Samuel's father-in-law, immigrated to the United States in early 1900s and founded The Nirenstein National Realty Map Company in 1925. Before creating the atlas company, he was involved in the real estate business in Springfield, Massachusetts. He coined the term "100 percent location" by standing on street corners with a number counter, and counting how many people walked by at 12 noon.
Nathan was also a prominent realtor and developer in the city of Springfield, where he owned and operated the Kellogg Building Realty Trust Company and spoke at the New England Realtors Convention (The Realtor in the 20th Century) and at the 72nd Annual Conference for the Association of Massachusetts Assessors (Downtown - The Appraiser's Dilemma and the Assessor's Nightmare).
Over the years, NAI Plotkin has broadened its services and market reach to become one of the largest full-service brokerage and management companies in the region. Today, the firm’s core management team continues to subscribe to the same business philosophy practiced by its founder, one that places quality relationships at the heart of every real estate transaction.
